Jesse Shamp:Forgiveness This is a strange quote from Jesse Shamp, who says here: Where God is taking us as the Body of Christ requires that we walk in forgiveness. Entering into forgiveness causes us to be free from the pain of the past and free from offense. The Lord asks us to forgive because there is a blessing in forgiveness. The enemy wants to bring offense so that the door of bitterness opens; this then gives him access to use this open door against us. To understand the strangeness of this quote, we need to examine the quote sentence by sentence.

Where God is taking us as the Body of Christ requires that we walk in forgiveness. This statement is absolutely true. Jesus said: And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25 This is a commandment rather than an option. Jesus died on the cross so that we might receive forgiveness from our sins. Hence to be Christ-like, because we are truly born again, we forgive.

Entering into forgiveness causes us to be free from the pain of the past and free from offense. This not true. We must forgive because that is what Jesus requires of us. There are no promises for us when we do forgive. It might even be extremely hard to forgive someone. However, if we are truly forgiven, because we are born again then we are free from the past and free from offense and there is no need for striving.

Where God is taking us as the Body of Christ requires that we walk in forgiveness. This again is true and biblical.

The enemy wants to bring offense so that the door of bitterness opens; this then gives him access to use this open door against us. This conforms not to the Bible but to New Apostolic Reformation teachings on spiritual warfare, but forgiving is not an act of spiritual warfare.

Spiritual warfare points us away from Jesus and towards Satan through fear. Our eyes should be on our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and nowhere in the Bible is there a verse which speaks to the contrary. Salvation within the NAR appears to be based on an experience, that is experiencing the presence of God. This is not and never will be biblical salvation. Salvation according to the Bible is rebirth. Jesus said: Except a man be born again, he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. John 3:3 How are you born again? Through repentance for your sin and asking Jesus to bear that sin on His Cross. Proverbs 28:13 tells us that (a) do not hide your sin (b) confess your sin and (c) forsake your sin. How do we forsake our sin? By Jesus becoming our sin on His cross. If we are involved simply in fighting an unseen enemy then our eyes are not on Jesus and our salvation is one of works (which is no salvation at all) and not one of grace. If that is the case then that peron needs to repent and be born again.

Hence the strangeness of this quote. Much of it is correct and much of it is wrong.
